ABSTRACT
Seals are very important devices to prevent leakage of fluid. In rotary mechanisms, seals of different types are used as sealing devices. Mechanical seals are employed when they operate under critically severe conditions. Life cycle of mechanical seals used for fuel oil supply pumps of ships like a transport ship is very short because low cost fuel oil contained impure elements is used. Leakage of mechanical seal is caused mainly by failure of sealing face. In this paper, basic structure, sealing principles, current state and solutions for problems of mechanical seal used in ships are presented.
